Objective

To utilize the network infrastructure as a strategy to initiate Bioinformatics Research and Education, Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, Department of Science and Technology Government of Gujarat has established The Virtual Institute of Bioinformatics [BIT ^Virtual] for the Academic institutes and Industrial sector of Gujarat.

Bioinformatics is a newly emerging interdisciplinary research area that can be viewed as an interface between biological and computer sciences. This branch of science organizes and interprets the overwhelming amount of data recently available on living organisms.

 

The science of Bioinformatics, which is the melding of molecular biology with computer science, is essential to the use of genomic information in understanding human diseases and in the identification of new molecular targets for drug discovery. In recognition o  f this, many universities, government institutions and pharmaceutical firms have formed bioinformatics groups, consisting of computational biologists and bioinformatics computer scientists. Such groups are the key to unraveling the mass of information generated by large scale sequencing efforts underway in laboratories around the world. Bit^Virtual is
