Genetic Diagnostic Training – GenDioT

Introduction

Human genetics is a complex subject encompassing a variety of overlapping fields including: classical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, genomics, population genetics, developmental genetics, clinical genetics, and genetic counseling. Genes can be the common factor of the qualities of most human-inherited traits. Genetic counseling can be useful to patients or relatives, at risk of an inherited disorder, where they are advised of the consequences and nature of the disorder, the probability of developing or transmitting it, and the options open to them in management and family planning. This complex process can be separated into diagnostics (the actual estimation of risk) and supportive aspects.

Genetic Diagnosis is a multidisciplinary subject, with utilization of new upcoming technologies for the betterment of the society. The growth of Biotechnology in the field of Genetic Diagnosis in Gujarat is oriented to develop dedicated and skilled human resource in the precedence areas to cope up with upcoming challenges of genetic disorders. Development of skilled human resource is of high relevance in the present scenario in Gujarat due to the increase in the number of cases of genetic disorders, day by day.

Looking in to the facts and with a mandate to promote and develop skilled human resource, GSBTM has conceptualized GenDioT – Genetic Diagnosis Training for Clinicians & Young Scientists of Gujarat.

Objectives

  • The program is designed to address HR development in specialized skills of Biotechnology academia and Industry sector of Gujarat.
  • Knowledge advancement and proficiency in genetic diagnosis and Human Genetics through education, training and awareness generation.
  • To create well-trained manpower and resources in Gujarat to accelerate research in the priority areas of R&D such as Human Genetics and genetic diagnosis.
  • It will also facilitate networking among the interested population of academia and industry at different level.

Training Program Details

The training has been divided into two phases:

Phase I: In this stage, the participants will be trained for 3 weeks into the State institutes, utilizing the existing infrastructures and expertise

Phase II: In this stage, the selected participants from Phase-I shall be sent to one national facility for further detailed training.

This office is conducting GenCioT since 2007 and thill date it has trained more than 40 clinicians and researchers of Guajrat. The fourth GenDioT Program was organized from 15th to 24th September, 2011
