About Biosafety

Biosafety is study for prevention of large-scale loss of biological integrity, focusing both on ecology and human health. Biotechnological advances in the field of life sciences have given rise to questions regarding the potential adverse effects of the genetically engineered organisms on the native biological diversity. Biosafety measures are an effective method promoting biotechnological advances, without harming the native biodiversity. Adversities originating out of biotechnological interventions in life sciences include: unintended changes in the competitiveness of modified organisms, virulence, adverse change in characteristics of target species, adverse impacts on non-target species, adverse impacts on ecosystem, potential for weediness in genetically modified crops, potential for transferring invasive genes to wild relatives, instability of the inserted gene, short & long term toxicity, short & long term allergenicity, increase in antinutritional properties from GM foods, probable genetic changes/mutations in new borns from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). For facilitating and regulating the research work on GMOs & products thereof at laboratory scale and also in commercial applications, the Government of India has notified “Rules for the Manufacture/Use/Import/Export and Storage of Hazardous Microorganisms, Genetically Engineered Organisms or Cells” through the Notification No. G.S.R.1037(E), dated 5th December, 1989 under the provisions of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 through the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF). These rules are commonly referred as ‘Rules 1989’. The two main agencies identified for implementation of the Rules 1989 are the Ministry of Environment & Forests and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Rules 1989 have also defined Competent Authorities and the composition of such Authorities for handling of various biosafety aspects.

Benefits of the Online Course Program

The course work would have offer the following:

  1. A complete tour through the rules and regulations of biosafety and bioethics.
  2. A compact and focused study of the above, in a stipulated time
  3. An overall understanding of the biosafety primarily in India.
  4. An online examination that would test the complete understanding of the biosafety and bioethics rules and regulations.

Who Should Apply?

GSBTM has initiated this program to create awareness about biosafety and to equip the biotech fraternity of the nation, to make an informed choice regarding research related to genetic modifications. Hence, the eligibility for a candidate to take training under this program would remain flexible, and desirous candidates not featuring in the indicative list, may request GSBTM to exercise their discretionary powers and admit certain trainees as special cases. The indicative list of eligible candidates is as cited below.

  • Graduate/Post-graduate/Research Fellows of Life Sciences
  • Graduate/Post-graduate in Law
  • Employees of industry at an interface with regulatory affairs

Fees Structure

  1. Admission Fee – INR 2000
  2. One time Examination Fee – INR 800
  3. Re-examination Fee – INR 800

A candidate applying for the first time has to send a Demand Draft of INR 2800/- of any Nationalized Bank in favour of 'MISSION DIRECTOR, Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission' payable at Gandhinagar. In case the candidate has failed in the first round of examination, and intends to give a second exam after 6 months of the first exam, he /she is free to pay only the Re-examination Fee of INR 800/- and send hard copy of the same application form, duly superscripted with “Re-examination” alongwith the DD of INR 800. No hard copy of the attested certificates would be needed.

Admission Procedure

The applicant desirous of receiving the training through this course, will have to download application form in pdf format and fill up the form available on the website and send it to GSBTM Office. Once the application form is received by GSBTM office, the same would be scrutinized for eligibility. If found eligible and selected, the applicant would be sent an email communication for final application in hard form. The application form along with the attested copies of certificates and a demand draft of the prescribed fee, payable at Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, Gandhinagar would be submitted to GSBTM. On receipt of the above mentioned documents, study material will be sent to the candidate within 10 days. From the day next to the 10th day of making the study material available, the candidate has to appear for the examination after 4 months. Three chances will be given to appear for the examination. If not, the registry expires, and the candidate has to apply for re-examination which include fees of INR 800.

Examination Procedure

Exam would be conducted at the GSBTM examination center in Gandhinagar. The examination would be of 60 minutes, covering 50 questions from the study material provided and other current issues in biosafety. This has been kept so, so that the candidate constantly updates himself/herself about the current issues, for long term benefit to him/her in the field of biosafety. Examination would be conducted at GSBTM Office, Gandhinagar, and the venue would be communicated to the candidate appropriately before the examination. The hard copy of the certificate showing the grade, if the candidate is passing the exam, would be couriered to the candidate. In case the candidate does not receive the certificate within 10 days, he/she can approach GSBTM office for further information. In case the candidate fails, no certificate would be sent. Passing Marks is 35%, i.e. 17 marks out of 50. There will be negative marking for multiple choice questions and true/false type of questions only. The grade system for the course is as follows:

  1. Grade A+: 80% and above
