Network Research Program on Advanced Biofuels

Biofuels in India is of strategic importance as its augers well with the ongoing initiatives of the Government such as Make in India, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, doubling the farmers income and import reduction.

Advanced biofuels are fuels which are produced from lignocellulosic feedstocks, non-food crops, industrial waste and residue streams and having low CO2 emission or high GHG reduction and do not compete with food crops for land use. There are various classes of Advanced Biofuels such as (1). Second Generation (2G) Ethanol, Drop-in fuels, (2). Algae based 3G biofuels, bio-CNG, bio-methanol, Di-Methyl Ether (DME) and (3). Biohydrogen, drop-in fuels with MSW as the source or feedstock materials.

A collaborative research program is visualized amongst research institutions of Gujarat and below mentioned DBT, GoI Centers of Excellence in Bioenergy.

  • Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai
  • Indian Oil Corporation R&D Centre, Faridabad
  • International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi
  • Indian Institute of Technology (Virtual Centre of 5 IITs)
  • The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi

A preference will be given to collaborative research proposal with 70:30 research support (70% support to the State Institute and 30% support to above mentioned Centre of Excellence in Bioenergy).
