Pharmaceutical & Health Care Biotechnology

Being the largest segment of the biotech globally as well as nationally, Health care biotechnology accounts around 60% of the market share in Gujarat including around 3267 registered pharmaceutical industries involved in the drug manufacturing. With investment of US$ 1.6 billion Gujarat accounts for around 40% of total pharma production of India with 17% of India’s export. Looking to the current growth rate of the sector and by various promotional activities by the Government, Gujarat is turning to be a global pharma hub.

  • Zydus Cadila's Research Center (ZRC) focuses on developing New Molecular Entities (NME) for clinical evaluation across several therapeutic segments.
  • The Company has been developing new drug delivery platform technologies and contributes to novel formulation development besides identifying new therapeutic segments. It is also developing new biologicals for commercialization.
  • It is conducting collaborative research projects with MNC Partners such as Pantheco Ag (For development of anti-bacterial drugs). The largest number of ANDA filings by an Indian pharma company in its first year of applications for filing was done by this firm with 12 ANDAs filing in 2003-04.
  • Filed 16 ANDAs for its active pharmaceuticals ingredients (API) in 2006. Filed 12 DMFs so far and plans to file 16 to 18 more in the coming year. So for, the group has filed 42 ANDAs and 45 DMFs.

  • The Torrent Research Centre has formed alliances with Novartis PharmaAG, Switzerland, Charterhouse Therapeutics Ltd., UK and National Chemical Laboratories, Pune for collaborative research.
  • The Company has six discovery projects in pipeline - three in cardiovascular, two in diabetes and one in central nervous system segment.
  • It has out licensed a compound (AGE Breakers) to Novartis for $ 3 million recently.

Clinical Research Services in Gujarat

A strong foothold of the pharmaceutical industry in Gujarat has been able to foster the growth of the clinical trials activity in the State. Further, the establishment of Quintiles Spectral India Pvt. Ltd. in Gujarat in the year 1997 was a historic event in the Clinical Trials industry in India. It was probably amongst the first few Clinical Research Organizations that had set base in India and indeed the first multinational CRO to establish its subsidiary in the country.
