1 National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)
1965 NDDB's research activities include Animal Genetics, Animal Health and Animal Nutrition for supporting its productivity enhancement programme for dairy cooperatives. The Dairy Board has set up Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Anand in 1979. Equipped with in-house research facilities and managed by qualified scientists, the Animal Health Section of the Laboratory is recognized as a Centre of Excellence for research on Foot & Mouth Disease and Bovine Tropical Theileriosis.
2 Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMRI), 1954 CSMCRI is an anchor for research in the field of Marine Biotechnology in Gujarat. It primarily focuses on areas such as structural and functional genomics, cultivation of seaweeds and bioprospecting for marine organisms, microbial extremophiles and bioremediation, sustainable saline wasteland cultivation technology, etc. Further, the Institute proposes to widen its research activities to stress genomics, seaweed biodiversity, cultivation and value addition, bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals along the Gujarat coast, halophillic biofertilizers and aquaculture and fisheries.
3 National Research Centre for Groundnut (NRCG) 1979 NRCG is conducting basic and strategic research to enhance production and quality of groundnut. It acts as a national repository of working collection of groundnut germplasm and information on groundnut research.
4 National Research Center for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (NRCMAP) 1992 NRCMAP is engaged in research towards germplasm enhancement of various medicinal and aromatic plants and production of parental lines and breeder's stock. NRCMAP acts as a national repository for the genetic resources of some important medicinal and aromatic plants and also undertakes contract research on several aspects of medicinal and aromatic plants.
5 The National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH) 1970 NIOH is involved in research on various aspects of Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Toxicology (metal, pesticide, reproductive, geno & neurobehavioral), Environmental Pollution (air, water, noise, thermal), Development of Safety Norms (chemical physical agents), Operational Research, Women Health, Agricultural Health.
6 Forensic Science Laboratory 2000 FSL undertakes investigation of serious crime related to adulteration, prohibited drugs, ballistic fire arms etc. using biotechnology techniques such as DNA extraction, quantitation, PCR Application and genotyping.
7 Gujarat Ecological Education & Research Foundation 1982 The Foundation is an autonomous body, focusing on ecological education and research. It has been playing an important role in conserving the germplasm of rare species to facilitate advanced research studies.

  • Born on the 19th of August 1925, Ramanbhai began his career as a lecturer at the L.M.College of Pharmacy, a premier institute in Ahmedabad. His trailblazing efforts in research had ushered in several new, need-based therapies. Today, Zydus Cadila is one of the leading biopharmaceutical companies in India, engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of a wide range of vaccines, diagnostics and biologicals.
2 Indravadhan A Modi Cadila Pharma
  • Born on 18th February 1926, I A Modi is the Founder Director of the erstwhile Indian biopharmaceutical major Cadila, restructured as Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd, since June 1995.
  • Be it, building brands, competitiveness in succeeding in a challenging environment, general welfare of customers, individual influence to peer group and society or building an ethical organization, Modi's contributions have been commendable. A leading player back at home, Cadila Pharmaceuticals under the leadership of I.A. Modi is well geared for a quantum leap in the global market.
3 U N Mehta Torrent Pharmaceuticals
  • Born in Mehmadpur village, Palanpur district, Gujarat, Shri U.N. Mehta began his career in 1944 as a clerk serving the Government. His desire to excel led him to take up the job as a medical representative for multinational drug giant, Sandoz.
  • A man of great vision and fierce determination, Shri Mehta set foot in the business world independently with INR 25,000 that he received as severance pay and 13 years of experience in the industry as his investments. He established an entity, which today is one of the most formidable forces in the Indian biopharma industry, Torrent Pharmaceuticals.
  • A pioneer and trendsetter in his own right, he established the Torrent Gujarat Biotech Plant in 1995, which marked the entry in the merging field of biotechnology.
4 Piyush Palkhiwala Maps Enzymes
  • An Enzyme Engineer from IIT, Delhi with over 35 years experience in R&D and production of enzyme technology, Piyush Palkhiwala established Maps Enzymes, way back in 1975.
  • Under his leadership, Maps emerged as a pioneer biotechnology company in the area of industrial enzymes. He is responsible for almost all of the scientific innovations developed by Maps in enzyme technology.
5 Sudhir Vaid Concord Biotech
  • Driven by his entrepreneurial spirit, Sudhir quit Ranbaxy to start his own consulting firm Sudam Consultants wherein he transferred number of fermentation based technologies to countries such as Hungary, Slovenia, Holland and number of reputed companies in India like Biocon, Lupin, Krebs biochemicals, etc.
  • Being proactive in nature and spirit, he went ahead to set up manufacturing facilities and buy the required machinery to manufacture Penicillin G Amidase Enzyme in May 2000 under the name of Concord Biotech Ltd, which has emerged as a leader in the enzyme market, today.

  • In the post-independence period, Ramanbhai worked relentlessly for creating a strong, vibrant and diversified industrial base in the western region in India.
  • During the span of his involvement in the life sciences business, Alembic achieved glorious milestones. The most momentous of them was the development of indigenous technology for manufacture of PENCILLIN through fermentation process.
